MKC Squared

How many of you made New Year’s resolutions last night? Okay, I’m raising my hand too! Glad to see I’m in good company.  I have a lot-A LOT! For business and personal. Like thousands of Americans what tops my personal list (pretty much every year) is losing weight.

BUT as far as my business one…this year it’s writing.

I have two romance novels in the works (one completed, one cruising a long) I’m also illustrating a book of poetry with my teenage daughter (when we started this project things were light and airy but the more I lose her to teenager land the more Gothic and dark things become, so I might have to wait till she grows out of this).

I’m also working on an e-book about painted furniture (Guess you didn't see that one coming).  Not sure who would buy it, but it isn't necessarily about the money-it’s just a goal of mine-and if I make money doing it-icing on the cake (see full circle back to my personal goal-food reference alert).

Another writing goal; keeping my blog current, which means posting at least 2xs a month, hopefully every week. I’d also like to do more tutorials-I’m all about sharing my secrets (If you ever want to know how to achieve a certain look, let me know, I’ll tell ya!)

So, without further ado here is my first post of the New Year, a short tutorial no less. Seems as if I’m headed off on the right track-Let’s see how long I can keep up with this goal :D

I had a client find me through a previous customer.  With all the craziness of the holidays though, I forgot to take a "before" picture. Obviously, you can see I remembered after I had applied the first coat of paint.

This fantastic lady wanted courtly checks, just like that famous black and white check designer we all know and love! Well, to be honest, I had never duplicated MKC’s black and white courtly checks.  Sure, we've all done black and white checks, but just like MKC? I was nervous, but I never shy away from a painting challenge. So, I said sure, I’ll do it.  She had several other pieces at home that she wanted to match this little plant stand too.

This is how I did it, if it helps great! First, I painted my base coat in a cream color, then I mapped out my squares.

Once the base coat was dry I colored in the alternating squares with one coat of black.  While the black was still wet I poured my blue and gold paints into a small container (I probably poured way too much in, I tend to do that, but you only need a dime size) remember you’re only using a tiny bit.  You’re trying to create the streak; you’re not full on painting.

So, with a dry brush dip your end in a little bit of blue and gold.

Then streak it through the black paint.

Now, what you don’t want to do is try and keep streaking it, because then you just get a green square, like this.

Easily corrected though, just go back in with a little more black to cover it up.  Again, the trick is not to use too much paint and have your streaks go in the same direction on every black square.

Then go into the white/cream squares and drag a little gold going in the opposite direction of the streak in the black square. You don’t have to do every square, sometimes less is more.

When finished your top should look like this. I must give some credit to my friend Lucy from Lucy Designs, who shared some of her techniques with me too.  See ya'll, share the love!

To fancy it up a bit and make it more MKCish, I decided to paint a finial and some small wooden balls to add to this piece.  I always feel like a good finial adds whimsy.

This is the final product.

Have a wonderful 2013! I’ll be seeing you soon with even more inspiration and tutorials.  If there’s something you’d like to see shoot me an email and let me know-I’ll try really hard to put it up!

And hey, while you're waiting for the next post why not follow me here at my other spots! Pinterest, FaceBook or Twitter

Thanks again for all your kind words and accolades, they really make my day!  Much love and peace friends! Let this New Year ROCK!

Gothic to Gorgeous

Do you have a favorite place that you “FREAK OUT” about going to?  Like, if you had a ton of money you would probably buy EVERYTHING in the place? Or you could just walk around for hours and still not take everything in? I actually have a variety of places that could fall under that criteria, BUT the one that tops my list is Gothic City Architectural Antiques in Buffalo, New York. At least once a year, my friend and I make our way up there and never leave empty handed.  This is what the place looks like when you first walk through the outside gates.

Ya, I know! Awesome! Right!  Hahaha! We found it by complete chance.  We had road tripped it up to Buffalo in search of another antique shop, when we passed this little gem and went, “What the hell was that!” We immediately turned the van around, parked and walked through the gates. At first we just stood there and looked around.  For us it was like standing at the pearly gates!

When I say pearly gates. I mean pearly gates too! Look who was there to greet us...

Now, if that's not a sign I don't know what is!
Then there was this sweet architectural gem...

Just fabulous pieces, a little out of my price range (Although, I did carry this "egg" around for awhile until I traded it in for somethings else) but they are owners are good at haggling prices with you, if you really want it.

Now, once you move past the outside salvage area you enter into a small back door around back, as if you're going into someone’s storm basement.  That's when you realize you're not in Kansas anymore, and your mind has a complete orgasm over all the STUFF that’s inside! It’s incredible.  Rooms full of furniture, full of shelves, full of nooks and crannies, chuck full of beautiful antique type salvage! From door knobs, to hardware, to windows and doors, to hinges and plates, to light fixtures and moldings-you name it and I guarantee you’ll find it there.
So, in the converted building (I believe it was a temple or sanctuary) there are 3 floors, floor to ceiling, jam packed full of stuff.  Then in the adjacent building there’s MORE flipping stuff!  I had my camera with me inside, but I was so enthralled with all the incredible merchandise around me that I actually forgot to take pictures! Ugh…I hate when I do that.

And after all that searching, imagining, admiring and drooling, this is what we came home with...

Okay, I know, it’s not a lot, but like I said in the beginning, “…if you had a ton of money you would probably buy EVERYTHING in the place.”  ABSOLUTELY!

I’m going to use the table legs for a variety of things. Converted coat racks, polls for my decorative bird houses, and a slew of other things.  I bought key plates, two small pieces of furniture AND more legs! That was the high light of my trip (I know BORING! The high light of my day is collecting table legs!)

On our way back through we stopped at this amazing store as well. Craft Company 6 in Rochester is a feast for the eyes! With all its eclectic art work from artisans’ and crafts people, this colorfully, energetic spot, will certainly entice your senses.

So, if you live in Upstate NY. And you just happen to be on your winter break, wondering what to do… Do yourself a favor, take a road trip to Rochester/Buffalo and check out these amazingly creative polar opposites!  They are sure to get your imagination rolling!

Monday

I'M BACK, again!

Hey Peeps! I’m back, ya, it’s been awhile, I know.  I've missed you too.  I actually had stopped painting for bit, well, not completely, but it slowed down significantly-LIFE-you all know how that goes.

Anyhow, I’m back and with a vengeance. I’m painting like a mad woman, well, I guess I’m always painting like a mad woman, but this time I swear! I also went back to my business name, prior to changing it-BIG mistake there-lesson learned, so I'm sticking with The Decorative Paintbrush...

I've also started writing another blog; it’s called The Syracuse Art Scene.  It’s all about the goings on in The Syracuse Art Community-okay, not EVERYTHING, but things I find interesting.  If you have a moment maybe you’d like to check it out, perhaps follow along?

I've also opened a new Etsy store too.  “Oh, Mary! How exciting!” You scream rather loudly!  I would bat my eyes and sheepishly reply, “Why yes. Please take a look!”  Hahahaha! Okay, we aren't that corny, right?  But really check it out-there’s some new things and some standard favs.  I’m going to be adding a whole new line of canvas work too, so be looking for that notice on my Face Book page. “What? You didn’t know I had a Face Book Page! Well today’s your lucky day, I’m including a link (several actually)!”

I’m very excited to be back, painting, creating-it’s when I feel most alive. I don’t know about you…but I am sooooo ready to put 2012 behind me.  I’m anticipating 2013 to be a VERY innovative, creative and productive year!  So, let’s get this party started shall we!

Okay, enough shouting from the roof tops, onto my latest piece!  It’s actually a two parter.  I had a client who gave me two gently used stools. She wanted them to be transformed.  She intended to put them into her “Man Cave” as her son called it. She wanted them sporty, yet fun for the kids.  They came to me looking like this…

Yep, that's my crazy studio in the background.  Please excuse the mess...Okay, not going to lie, it's never clean :D Let's face it the only clean & pristine studio's you'll see are ones where there isn't a lot of creating going on inside-are ya with me!

Now, these chairs left looking just a bit different! One chair was done in a Dallas Cowboys theme-the other a Syracuse University theme.  These are the pictures of The Cowboys chair. Tomorrow I’ll show you the SU one. Enjoy!

A Recipe For Cuteness

Here's a quicky for you...

In our Etsy store under "Paint to Order", we have several items that can be ordered and then custom painted to match any design a customer has in mind. People have sent us all kinds of ideas! Interesting quotes, whimsical patterns, funky designs, even actual fabric to match!  I love working with people to come up with a fantastic and unique piece of furniture, that will be the highlight of the room that it goes into! And I really LOVE when people see their ideas transformed into artwork-they get so excited-that's the real joy of doing what I do!

This customer wanted a book case for her daughter's room, one that she could add baskets to for toy storage.  She looked all over my shop and these were the specifications she gave me...She said, "I love this painted stool...

And this jewelry box is really cute...

We also like this recipe box...

and my husband and I especially love this table (although we know we really can't put it in our infant daughter's room but we really like it!)

She went on to say that they had painted the room green and they loved the colors purple and red.  "We don't want something to "themey" because we want it to be able to grow with her, but we like the idea of a lady bug and flowers because we're doing a garden theme in her room". The one criteria that her husband was adamant about  was that there could be NO dinosaurs (although I think...he was joking...and I contemplated putting one on the bottom shelf just for kicks and giggles).

So, I took all these ideas, put them together, and this is what I came up with...

I'm hoping Emma and her parents will be happy with their book case/toy storage.  I tried to incorporate everything they liked (although there isn't any zebra print or dinosaurs).

Have you guys been painting any cool things lately?  Please come share them on my Face Book page! I love to see what you're up too! Then I'll pin them on my Painted & Uniquely Designed Furniture page on Pinterest (I'm trying to create the biggest gallery of funky furniture, so help a sister out!).

And remember, we'll be linking this post up & sharing with our friends on our "Where We Party Page"
as well as My Repurposed Life and Between Naps on the Porch

Have a very COLORFUL weekend!
